Welcome to our site, where we’ll share thoughts on self-sufficient living, permaculture, natural building, the creation of Balsamwood, and other adventures on Quebec’s side of the Ottawa Valley (also  known as L’Outaouais), on the meandering Picanoc River.

Living by Moonlyte is intended to provide insight to one couple’s quest for a low-impact lifestyle. Where the magnetic pull of the moon and the changing of seasons set the pace for the daily challenges and rewards encountered as they strive to live in harmony with the natural world.

Balsamwood is the name given to our passive solar, cordwood masonry, off-grid home. Salvaging balsam fir logs that have been cleared from the building site and a nearby re-forestation project, Balsamwood will consist of a slab-on-grade foundation, timber frame, cordwood infill and a low-maintenance, earth-roof. The home will be heated by a highly efficient masonry stove. Using a combination of energy efficient techniques, feng shui and permaculture, our goal is to create a low-maintenance woodland retreat surrounded by food forest gardens, nature trails, and eventually, a sauna by the river.
